24E800 EGR cooler bypass flap activation

Fault code 24E800 EGR cooler bypass flap activation is related to the problem with EGR cooler flap opening. Sometime this actuator could be electronically operated and sometime it could be operated by pneumatic system. The aim of using exhaust gas cooler is to burn more exhaust gas and increase fuel efficiency of engine. Exhaust gas cooler protect the engine by lowering the temperature of combustion by cooled exhaust gas. If it is controlled by electronically than there would be an electrical actuator to open or close exhaust gas cooler flap. But if it is pneumatically controlled than there will be a pneumatic actuator motor to open or close exhaust gas cooler flap. Whenever there is some problem occurs due to which exhaust gas cooler does not open than engine control module use to set fault code store in control module.

flap actuator motor

Causes of 24E800 EGR cooler bypass flap activation :

Faulty actuator motor.

Failure of exhaust gas cooler flap actuator motor.

Block ot jam exhaust gas cooler falp due to carbon deposition it .

Leak vacuum pipe which is use to control exhaust gas cooler flap.

Damage wiring harness of actuator motor.

Symptoms of 24E800 EGR cooler bypass flap activation :

There might be no power or boost at engine while driving.

check engine light will illuminate on cluster meter.

when Egr cooler flap will not open there is a possibility of low mileage.

how to trouble shoot

When fault code 24E800 EGR cooler bypass flap activation is store in engine control module. Go to engine compartment look for exhaust gas cooler flap if you find it. Than check visually if exhaust gas cooler is electronically controlled or pneumatically. If it is electronically control than with the help of actuation test try to actuate exhaust gas cooler flap check if it is actuating or not. If it does not actuate than remove connector from it and check voltage supply at connector.

First check voltage at ignition than with the help of actuation test actuate motor and check voltage if voltage is coming out from controller to actuator motor at actuation test. If voltage is coming out to actuate motor than it might be possible that actuator is faulty or jam due to excessive carbon deposition on it. Remove actuator motor if it is jam than remove it and refit it in after cleaning.  Check if does start working or not after cleaning. If does start working than good but if does not than replace it with new actuator motor. But if there is a problem of power supply or ground than check blown fuse and damage wiring harness of the actuator.

When exhaust gas cooler flap is control by pneumatic actuator motor. You will see an actuator motor with a vacuum pipe which is connected with exhaust gas cooler flap. In case of fault code store in control module first you need to check if vacuum pipe is leak or not. If vacuum pipe is not leak than go to check weather actuator motor is working or not. Check voltage at actuator motor, there should be 12 volts or below at ignition or at engine running.

If voltage is present at actuator motor than motor should work. Remove vacuum pipe out from exhaust gas cooler flap, put your finger on the mouth of pipe you should feel that pipe is sucking you finger in. if it does than it means that actuator motor is working but if does not than actuator motor is not working. If actuator motor is not working replace actuator motor so that problem can be solve.

In most of the cases when this fault code is store in control module. Then there is a high chance of carbon deposition on the flap of exhaust gas cooler. Take a short cut to solve this problem, when found this fault code store in control module directly remove vacuum pipe from exhaust gas cooler flap. If pipe does vacuum than do not do any other thing, directly remove exhaust gas cooler out. There will be carbon deposition on flap due to which this fault code is store in control module.

Solution :

Replace faulty actuator motor.

Clean deposit carbon on exhaust gas cooler flap.

Replace leak vacuum pipe of exhaust gas cooler flap.

Repair damage wiring harness of actuator motor.
