Fault code 01317 instrument cluster control module usually appear in the VW group of vehicle. When this fault code is stored in the control module it means that there is a starting problem occurring in the vehicle. This fault code is mostly stored in the instrument cluster control module when a vehicle has a starting problem.
In vw group of vehicle immobilizer system is installed in the instrument cluster meter. Due to this if the instrument cluster meter has any problem like, a faulty instrument cluster meter circuit, damaged CAN wiring harness, etc. Then the vehicle will have a starting problem as the immobilizer is the security system of the vehicle which is not getting proper signal. In this case, sometimes the vehicle starts and stalls immediately.
Causes of 01317 instrument cluster control module:
Faulty instrument cluster meter.
Damage CAN line wiring harness of the vehicle.
Faulty engine control module.
The faulty key of the vehicle.
Symptoms of 01317 instrument cluster control module:
The instrument cluster meter will not light up.
Engine starting problem.
The fault code will be store in the control module.
Vehicle will start and stall.
How to troubleshoot:
If this fault code is store in the control module and the vehicle is not starting. First, check the instrument cluster meter visually if check engine light illuminating on cluster meter or not. If the check engine light is not illuminating on the cluster meter then it might be possible that the engine control module is faulty due to which there is miscommunication between the engine control module and cluster the meter. Also, check at instrument cluster meter if there is a SAFE warning light at the cluster meter. If it is there then the vehicle will not start unless this safe warning light does not stop illuminating on cluster meter.
But when the check engine light is illuminating on the cluster meter and still does not start then there might be some other problem that needs to be diagnosed in deep. Check the wiring harness of the instrument cluster meter. If the CAN line of the instrument cluster meter is damage then there is will starting problem. If the CAN line wiring harness is not damage then this fault code is store in the control module. Then check the instrument cluster meter, it might be possible that the instrument cluster meter is faulty.
Most of the time in this situation faulty instrument cluster meter is the main reason behind this problem. As in VW vehicle immobilizer system is installed in the instrument cluster meter. So when there is any problem with the instrument cluster meter. A vehicle security system will not get a proper signal. As a result which vehicle will face a starting problem. Replace the faulty instrument control module to get out of this problem.
If the instrument cluster is not faulty then check all the other things like the engine control module. Check the engine control module for this problem, sometime engine control module fails and it does not send any signal to the instrument cluster meter. Because of this reason, the engine will have a starting problem. Change the faulty engine control module so that this problem can be solve.
Also, check the wiring harness around the engine control module and fuse at the fuse box. Some fuse are there at the fuse box which supplies the power to the engine control module. When that fuse blows up they will stop supplying power to the engine control module. Replace blown fuse or damaged wiring harness around engine control module.
In very rare cases vehicle keys also create this kind of problem. There is a small sensor inside the key which is called a key sensor. This sensor is built inside a key which looks like a very fine thin layer of glass. Which get broken when the key drop at the floor. If all the above things are good and there is no problem. Then check the key sensor if it does not send a signal to the control module. Then replace this key sensor so that the problem can be solve.
What was in our case?
In our case when we inspect the vehicle we found that vehicle is not starting. At instrument cluster meter there was SAFE warning light was illuminating on cluster meter. After hooking up scan tool when we found this fault code 01317 instrument cluster control module. We check the CAN line wiring harness of the instrument cluster meter. There was no damage at the wiring harness of the cluster meter.
Than we remove the instrument cluster meter and check it on table with the help of other machine. We connect all the power supply, ground wiring, and signal wire to instrument cluster. We found there instrument cluster meter was not lighting up properly. After checking long time we find that instrument cluster meter is faulty. Its circuit was damage at the different place. After repairing all that damage portion of the cluster meter. We fix this problem and instrument cluster meter was lighting up properly. After refitting cluster meter into the vehicle when we try to start the vehicle problem was solve.
Solution:
Replace faulty instrument cluster meter.
Repair damage CAN wiring harness of the instrument cluster meter.
Replace damage sensor of key.
Repair or replace faulty engine control module.
Notes:
When this kind of fault code store in control module. First you need to check all the wiring harness which is connecting engine control module and instrument cluster module. There are two CAN line wiring harness in the wiring loom. Which is use to communication between all the control modules present in vehicle. When this wiring harness get damage due to any reason. It will stop sending signal to all control module. Because of which some control module will stop functioning due missing messages. If CAN line wiring harness is open or damage. Then repair it, but if does not then remove engine control module, instrument cluster meter and key.
With the help of table machine which is use to power up all these things. Power up all these control module and then check which control module in showing problem. Most of the time in this situation instrument cluster meter is faulty thing. Its internal circuit get damage due to moisture from the filter which is located at the circuit of instrument cluster meter circuit. Repair or replace instrument cluster meter to solve this kind of problem. In some cases key is the faulty thing which is creating this kind of fault code to store in control module. Inside key there is a sensor which get brake easily when it drop to floor. Replace key and recode it according to the control module
