P0472 exhaust back pressure sensor 1 has short circuit to ground

Fault code P0472 exhaust back pressure sensor 1 has short circuit to ground is related to the problem with exhaust back pressure sensor. It means that either exhaust back pressure sensor not working properly as it could be or it is completely not working. Exhaust back pressure sensor is mounted near the turbo charger and it is use to determine the turbo boost to optimize engine power. Engine control module feed voltage and reference voltage to exhaust back pressure sensor. Exhaust back pressure sensor send signal of about turbo boost to engine control module in the form of voltage. When engine control module recieve irregular signal from exhaust back pressure sensor. Than it set fault code P0472 exhaust back pressure sensor 1 has short circuit to ground

Causes of P0472 exhaust back pressure sensor 1 has short circuit to ground:

Loose connection with exhaust back pressure sensor.

Exhaust back pressure sensor no longer in working condition.

Poor electrical connection exhaust back pressure sensor.

Open circuit between engine control module and exhaust back pressure sensor.

Damage wiring harness of exhaust back pressure sensor.

Faulty exhaust back pressure sensor internally shorted.

Loose connection at the engine control module.

Faulty engine control module which is in very rare cases.

Symptoms of P0472 exhaust back pressure sensor 1 has short circuit to ground:

Lake of power at engine while driving at high speed.

No boosting power while driving.

Check engine light will illuminate on cluster meter.

Fault code is store in engine control module.

Black smoke can be seen from end of the exhaust (in very rare cases).

How to trouble shoot P0472 exhaust back pressure sensor 1 has short circuit to ground:

When found P0472 exhaust back pressure sensor 1 has short circuit to ground fault code store in engine control module. First of all try to reset that fault code and then take a short test drive to confirm the fault code. If it comes again after taking a test drive than it means it means that there is some other problem.

Exhaust back pressure sensor is mounted near turbo charger, go to near turbo charger and inspect visually if there is any damage at wiring harness you can see. Because due to heat over that area there is a chance of wiring harness damage. Check for damage wiring harness if found than repair that.

Than go to check loose connection at exhaust back pressure sensor connector. If there is any loose connection at the connector of sensor than do it a perfect connection.

Disconnect the terminal of the sensor out from sensor and check corrosion at the pin of connector. With the help of contact cleaner clean terminal and reconnect it again with sensor. Try to reset fault code with the help scan tool and then take a test drive. If fault code again pop up than go to check this fault code deeply.

Remove connector from sensor, check power supply, reference voltage and ground all these things should be present at the connector when ignition is turn ON. There would be three pins on the connector 1) 5V power supply 2) 5V reference voltage 3) ground.  If power supply, refference voltage and ground is not present at the connector than check reason behind this.

Now remove sensor outside from turbo charger and check resistance of the sensor with the help of multimeter. Resistance of the sensor should meet the value given from manufacturer. If sensor is showing low or high resistance than replace that sensor. After replacing that faulty sensor fault code should be present. If still fault code is store in control module than it might be possible that there some other problem which is causing this fault code to be store in control module.

Another thing that could be the reason behind this fault code is leak near turbocharger. Due to which turbocharger does not buil enough pressure to boost engine power. This leak could be found near turbocharger, or at intake manifold of the air intake.

Common mistake while trouble shooting:

The most common problem while diagnosing this problem is mechanic get confuse with the name of this sensor. Because they usually thing this is about exhaust gas recirculation valve sensor. They start diagnosing on that particular sensor but it is not the EGR sensor. Exhaust back pressure sensor is use to monitor boost pressure in turbocharger. It could be found near turbo, there are many sensor which are similar to this sensor. Do not get confuse with all the other sensor as all the other sensor have differenct function.

What repair can fix it?

Repairing damage wiring harness of the sensor.

Clean connector of the sensor or repair damage or corroded pin inside connector.

Clean sensor if carbon deposit on the sensor.

Replace faulty exhaust pressure sensor.

Replace blown fuse.

How serious it can be to drive with fault code P0472:

Driving with fault code can be not good as when this fault code is store in engine control module. Than it means that vehicle does not have power or boosting at engine. As when this fault code indicate problem towards exhaust back pressure sensor which play an important role in boosting engine power while driving.
