C2205 there is an internal fault in the steering angle sensor

Fault code C2205 there is an internal fault in the steering angle sensor stored in the control module when the control module receives the wrong signal from the steering angle sensor. A steering angle sensor is use to monitor the moment of the steering wheel. It is located below the steering wheel when the driver puts the effort on the steering wheel to turn the steering left or right. The steering angle sensor monitors this movement and signals to some chassis control modules. The chassis control module uses this signal to control the different systems of the vehicle.

The steering angle sensor sends this signal to the ABS (antilock braking system) control module. ABS (antilock braking system) control module uses this signal to apply the brake while driving. When the steering angle sensor sends a signal to the ABS control module according to which vehicle is running in a straight-ahead position.

In this condition ABS control module will apply brake equally to each wheel to stop the vehicle. When the steering angle sensor sends a signal to the control module according to which vehicle is turning in the right or left side. In this condition, the ABS control module will not apply equal pressure to each tire to stop the vehicle. If it applies the equal brake to each tire then there will be a risk of tire skidding.

When the steering angle sensor fails to send a signal to the control module for any reason. For damaged wiring harness, incorrect basic setting of steering angle sensor, loose connection at the connector of angle sensor. This could happen after opening and fitting of steering rack. While doing the alignment of the vehicle after opening the suspension.

Causes of C2205 there is an internal fault:

Faulty steering angle sensor.

No incorrect basic setting of the angle sensor.

The blown fuse of the steering angle sensor.

Damage wiring harness of the steering angle sensor.

Symptoms of C2205 there is an internal fault:

The steering angle sensor warning light will start illuminating on cluster meter.

Fault code present in the control module.

The ABS warning light will be also there.

Steering operations become hard to steer.

How to trouble shoot of C2205 there is an internal fault:

When the steering angle sensor starts flashing on the cluster meter. Hook up the scan tool to find out the problem due to which warning light is illuminating on the cluster meter. When found fault code C2205 there is an internal fault in the steering angle store in the control module. Start checking this problem by checking the reading of the steering angle sensor with the help of the scan tool in the read data stream.

Turn the steering angle sensor left and check if the reading of steering angle sensor if reading of steering angle sensor does not change as the steering wheel is turned. Then it means that the angle sensor is faulty. This could happen due to multiple reasons like. Check the connector of the steering angle sensor if it is disconnected then connect it. Check the wiring harness of the steering angle sensor if there is any damage to the wiring harness then repair it. Also, check the fuse of the sensor if the fuse is then replace that fuse.

In case if steering angle sensor reading changes as the steering wheel is turn by the driver. Then it might be possible that the angle sensor is not calibrated or its fitting is not perfect. When the steering angle sensor needs calibration, it will show the fault code of the no-incorrect basic setting. You need to recalibrate it after fitting it at its original position. After calibration fault of the steering angle sensor should not be stored in the control module.

If after calibrating the steering angle sensor warning light still illuminates on the cluster meter. They tried to recalibrate it because sometimes the calibration process did not work at one time. When after several times at steering angle sensor calibration, the fault code of the steering angle sensor calibration did not go off. Then in this situation, you need to replace the steering angle sensor to solve this problem.

How to set steering angle sensor:

First, set the front of both tires in a straight-ahead position. Then check the reading of the steering angle sensor with the help of the scan tool. If the reading of the steering angle sensor is show above (+20, -20). Then remove the steering angle sensor outside from its place and turn it to near 0 position. Then refit it at its place and place the steering wheel at its straight-ahead position. Now check the reading of the steering angle sensor on the scan tool when the tires are at a straight-ahead position. If it shows a reading near 0 then it means that now angle sensor is at its original position.

How risky it is to drive with this fault code:

Driving with this fault code C2205 there is an internal fault in the steering angle could be risky. As steering angle sensor plays an important role in controlling the chassis management for the controller. Like steering angle sensors play an important role in braking systems. The ABS control module uses the signal of the angle sensor to apply the brakes. Like when the steering angle sensor sends a signal to the ABS control module that the vehicle is running in a straight-ahead position.

The ABS control module sends an equal amount of force to each wheel brake cylinder. But when the steering angle sensor sends a signal to the ABS control module that vehicle is turning in either the left or right side. Then at this time ABS control module will not send an equal amount of force to each wheel brake cylinder. As if it will send an equal amount of force to each cylinder. There will be the chance of tire skidding while braking.

Just like this angle sensor sends a signal to the headlight control module. When the angle sends a signal to the headlight control module then the vehicle is turning left or right side. Then headlight control module turns ON the left or right side cornering light.

What was in my case?

In my case, we changed the sensor located on the power steering pump in the engine compartment. Because a fault is present in the control module. Which indicated a problem with that sensor. But after changing that sensor steering operation become hard to steer. We changed the steering oil as we were confused because the steering operation became hard after changing that sensor. Then we replace that sensor with a brand new sensor. But still, the problem was the same, we felt hesitation while turning the steering wheel.

Then we flash the complete fluid of power steering oil. Refill the new fluid in the system and check the steering operation. But still, it was not as soft as we see in Mercedes. Then we replaced the complete steering rack as we found some metal particles coming out from the steering while flushing. After replacing the steering rack steering operation becomes as soft as we see in Mercedes.

After all this when we take a short trial of the vehicle we see a steering warning light illuminating on the cluster meter. When we scanned the vehicle, we found this fault code C2205 there is an internal fault in the steering angle sensor stored in the control module. After checking the reading of the steering angle sensor we found that the angle sensor was fine only its zero position was out from its place. We recalibrate it at its original position and fault code, and the warning light goes off after this.
