260100 exhaust gas temperature sensor

Fault code 260100 exhaust gas temperature sensor is related to the problem with the exhaust gas temperature sensor. Which is used to monitor the temperature of exhaust gas at the time of exhaust gas enter into combustion engine through intake manifold. This sensor is located at the rear side body of exhaust gas cooler from where exhaust gas get cool and enter into intake manifold. Temperature sensor monitor temperature of exhaust gas and send this signal to engine control module on which engine control module release or stop exhaust gas into intake manifold. According to the requirement of the engine to make power at high speed.

Failure of exhaust gas temperature sensor can lead engine’s ability to correctly burn air fuel. Because when exhaust gas temperature sensor send wrong signal to engine control module. Engine control module start injecting low or high amount of fuel into combustion engine. This can lead to reduce engine power, decrease fuel efficiency and increased emission. Also a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor can lead to engine overheating, due to problem with the exhaust gas irregular flow.

Causes of 260100 exhaust gas temperature sensor:

Faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor.

Leak exhaust gas pipe line.

Carbon deposition on sensor.

Carbon deposition in exhaust gas pipe line.

Damage wiring harness of the sensor.

symptoms of 260100 exhaust gas temperature senso:

Engine may start missing, jerking.

No pickup at high speed or low speed.

Black smoke from exhaust.

Engine light may illuminate on cluster meter.

Fault could be store in control module.

Reduce engine mileage or power.

How to trouble shoot :

When engine start misbehaving like hesitating, pick up issue, low mileage, no power etc. Than it means that there is some problem at the engine compartment which may be mechanical or electrical. To find out what causing engine due to which engine start misbehaving. First visually you need to check at the engine compartment if there is some problem which we can fix than fix that. If you could not find any problem at the engine compartment than hook up scan tool to find out the problem of fault code that causing engine to misbehave.

If found fault code 260100 exhaust gas temperature sensor store in engine control module. Than go to read data stream to check reading of exhaust gas temperature sensor. If exhaust gas temperature sensor is showing any reading below or showing reading above actual value than it means that exhaust gas temperature sensor is not working properly. But if exhaust gas temperature sensor is showing no reading than it could be possible that sensor wiring harness is damage.

Now go to check condition of exhaust gas temperature sensor visually if it is broken of something. Check connector of exhaust gas temperature sensor if there is some loose connection at the sensor than make it perfect. Check voltage at the connector there would be some voltage at the connector of sensor. If voltage present at the connector of sensor than it means that there is no wiring harness damage problem.

To confirm if wiring harness is damage or not than do a continuity test of wiring harness of the sensor. Both the wires of sensor directly come from engine control module. Find the pin of the wire at the connector of engine control module. Connect multi meter from both the ends of wire, multimeter should start beeping when both the end is touch. If multimeter does not beep when both the ends of wire are touch than it means that wiring harness of the sensor is damage.

To check condition of the sensor, remove sensor from its place and connect both the pins of sensor with multimeter to check the resistance of the sensor. Give some heat at the end of sensor through heat gun or with something else. If resistance start fluctuating like up or down than it means that sensor is working. If there is no changes at the resistance of the sensor after applying heat on it. Than it means that sensor is not working, need to replace it with new one.

If sensor is working fine than it could be possible that there is some leak at pipe line of exhaust gas. Find leak at the pipe line of exhaust gas or at the exhaust gas cooler. If there is a leak than repair that leak or replace that part from where exhaust gas is coming out side. So that exhaust gas should not go outside from pipe line. There may be a chance of leak at the body of exhaust gas cooler, as this is a common problem in bmw which is quite not good.

If there is no leak at exhaust gas pipe or cooler than it could be possible that exhaust gas line is block due to carbon deposition. Remove exhaust gas cooler body, exhaust gas valve outside form engine and clean them proper with carbon cleaner liquid. Also check diesel particulate filter for block from inside. Remove complete exhaust gas line and intake manifold to clean so that there is no carbon deposition should take place. Due to which exhaust gas did not find way to enter into combustion engine.

Also check intake manifold and intake manifold runner for carbon deposition. Check if manifold runner flap is working or not. If any one from them is broken or not working than replace that flap. Sometime broken intake manifold runner get stuk to the wall of air intake into combustion engine. Because of which exhaust gas did not get enter into intake manifold. Due to which exhaust gas store in to the pipe line of exhaust gas. In this situation exhaust gas temperature sensor will set fault code of resistance too high or too low.

Solution :

Replace faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor.

Repair damage wiring harness of the sensor.

Repair or leak exhaust gas pipe line.

Clean carbon deposition on exhaust gas cooler and exhaust gas valve.

Clean intake manifold runner flap.

Make tight all loose connection of exhaust gas pipe line.

Note :

When found fault code 260100 exhaust gas temperature sensor store in engine control module. First of all do follow all the above method so that problem can be solve. Remove exhaust gas temperature sensor from its body very carefully as there is a risk of brok down of sensor. If carbon is present at the mouth of sensor than clean sensor. Check resisitance of the sensor, if does not match the require value of resistance than replace that faulty sensor.
